One of our most common and routine surgeries to help keep your pet healthy.
Spaying or neutering, is the process of “fixing” your pet. These surgical procedures will remove your pet’s reproductive organs so they cannot bear their own offspring. For more details on the spaying and neutering services we provide here at Cobequid Animal Hospital, please feel free to call us at 902-865-8110.
These procedures prevent overpopulation and unwanted breeding which leads to abandoned animals. If more and more pets are fixed, shelters and rescue groups will not be as overwhelmed. These procedures also provide a multitude of health benefits. Pets who have been fixed are less likely to develop infections, cancers and will generally be less susceptible to aggressive behaviours.
These procedures can actually be performed well into your pet’s adulthood, but the ideal time to have them done is before they reach sexual maturity. For dogs, this means they should be done around 6-months-old. For cats, these procedures can be performed at around 4 to 6 months of age.
We recommend you wait until about 2 weeks after the birth before scheduling your pet’s spay procedure. This will allow for plenty of time for the kittens/puppies to be properly weaned.
