This is disease of the eye, where the immune system reacts against the cornea (auto immune disease). Normally the cornea is a thin translucent layer of cells. With Pannus, blood vessels appear, extending from the sclerotic (white of the eye) into the cornea. Gradually the cornea is totally invaded by blood vessels and new tissue grows over the normal one, thickening the cornea and causing loss of vision.
The treatment requires the daily use of immune-suppressive drugs. Therapeutic doses of vitamins A, D and E also have a positive effect on controlling the symptoms of Pannus.
